What activity does an Oregon Concealed Handgun License allow? CHL FAQs:

Q have been asked to weight in on what all an Oregon CHL protects or does not protect from. A questions we get is:


"How many guns can we have on me?"

"Can I carry my switchblade with a CHL"

The answers may surprise you. As always, we back up our answers with the statute.


To start out we have to define what is and is not a crime, then what the Oregon CHL exempts you from. We broke the most common questions down into categories.




ON YOUR PERSON

Q: Is it a crime to carry a pistol on your person concealed?

A: Yes: ORS 166.250 (1)(a)

Q: Does an Oregon CHL exempt or protect you from prosecution for carrying a pistol concealed upon your person?

A: Yes: ORS 166.260 (1)(i)

Q: Is it a crime to carry a rifle or long-gun on your person concealed?

A: Yes: ORS 166.250 (1)(a)

Q: Does an Oregon CHL exempt or protect you from prosecution for carrying a rifle or long-gun concealed upon your person?

A: Yes: ORS 166.260 (1)(i)

IN YOUR VEHICLE

Q: Is it a crime to carry a pistol on concealed and readily accessible within a vehicle?

A: Yes: ORS 166.250 (1)(b)

Q: Does a CHL exempt or protect you carrying a pistol concealed and readily accessible within a vehicle?

A: Yes: ORS 166.260 (1)(i)

Q: Is it a crime to carry a rifle or long-gun concealed and readily accessible within a vehicle?

A: No: ORS 166.250 (1)(b) just covers pistols, not rifles or long-guns.

Q: Does an Oregon CHL exempt or protect you carrying a rifle or long-gun concealed and readily accessible within a vehicle?

A: It doesn’t matter because it’s not an unlawful activity to begin with. ORS 166.250 (1)(b) only applies to pistols.

OTHER WEAPONS

Q: Is it a crime to carry concealed upon your person a, “any knife having a blade that projects or swings into position by force of a spring or by centrifugal force, any dirk, dagger, ice pick, slungshot, metal knuckles, or any similar instrument by the use of which injury could be inflicted upon the person”

A: Yes. ORS 166.240

Q: Does an Oregon CHL exempt or protect you carrying any of the above weapons concealed upon your person?

A: No these are not lawful even with with an Oregon CHL.
